Top 5 Movies Of 2016

Frosty greetings, fellow Otaku & Metalheads!

As the year ends, the air gets colder. Our blood flows slower, and the ice hardens. During these times, we often stay inside for warmth, and put in a movie to keep our minds off of the weather. What coincidence, that today I put up this list, the top 5 movies of 2016. This year we’ve had a lot of good films come out, as the legacy of older features came back, and newer cinema classics emerged to stake their claim. Maybe as you read this list, you might find something to watch. Anyways, here are my top 5 movies of 2016!

5) Captain America - Civil War (Trailer)
Truth be told, I wasn’t quite fond of this entry into the Captain America series. I thought it took itself far more seriously than The Winter Soldier (At least that movie knew when to not to be so bleak), and it really left me with a severe hatred of Tony Stark/Iron Man, and the characters & story in general came across as a little idiotic (Except for Black Panther. He actually had a brain). That being said, it’s still an appropriate continuation of the Marvel universe, as a even greater conflict seems to be brewing amongst the heroes. All of the actors are still giving it their all, but the end result is far darker than anything before. I’m not saying I actively avoid Civil War, but out of all the Captain America films, it’s the one I’m least likely to watch.

4) Suicide Squad (Trailer)
And here we come to the black sheep of the list. When the trailers of Suicide Squad first came out, fans of the original comic definitely were afraid. There were too many changes to the story & characters, and considering that movies based on DC Comics definitely have a tainted legacy (See Green Lantern for example), the comic geeks were rightfully scared. Hell, I’ve never read the source material, and I picked up some of that fear that fans were feeling. Come time to watch the actual film, and it turned out to be one of the best comic book movies of this year! Granted, Suicide Squad has a host of issues (Plot holes galore), but if you can ignore most of the problems this film has, then you’ll be treated to one of the wildest rides of 2016!

3) Doctor Strange (Trailer)
I realized as I was making this list, 2016 was a really great year for Marvel (And maybe DC on the side). They put out a lot of great films this year, and Doctor Strange was definitely great! Released early last month, Doctor Strange is this year’s Ant Man. A little more serious, hence why it’s at the number 3 spot. Apart from that one thing, this movie showed off a character that sadly isn’t quite as high on the totem pole as other Marvel heroes, but still can hold his own with just about anybody thrown his way. Coupled with some memorable characters & visuals, and you have a movie that’s a little on the strange side. Pun totally intended!

2) Star Trek Beyond (Trailer)
The one movie that breaks the mold of this list, Star Trek Beyond was something of a surprise to me. I remember when the trailer was first shown, there was some backlash for some reason, and that left a little bit of worry in me. Come time to watch the movie, and I came to the realization that it doesn’t even suck at all! Granted I got some small gripes, but overall I thought the 3rd entry into the modern Star Trek movie series was fun! The actors looked like they were having fun, the visuals were nice & slick, the action superb, and the overall package was wrapped up in a nice paper. Another movie that you shouldn’t judge by it’s cover!

Before we get to my number 1, I wanted to talk about the honorable mentions of 2016. We’ve have plenty of movies come out this year, and sadly some came to this spot on the list. Maybe there was something off about them, maybe it wasn’t as strong as the others on here, who knows. Anyways, here are my honorable mentions.

HM1) Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them (Trailer) & Moana (Trailer)
I’m legitimately really conflicted with this first movie.  Don’t get me wrong, I actually enjoy Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Very much so! The dimension of Harry Potter has always been a fascinating one, and to see the world before The Boy Who Lived was definitely a treat. That being said.....I had some gripes as I was watching. The trailers revealed a lot of what would happen (In their defense, they didn’t spoil the big stuff), and there were parts of the story that I really thought were cheap at best. Even with it’s faults, it’s a great return into the wizarding world, and I hope that the 4 other films in the series can improve upon the foundation built.

Moana, on the other, I had no conflicts with. If this had come out early last month, then I would have gladly put it on the main list. What I would have replaced, I don’t know. Regardless, this was a lot of fun to watch! It’s nice to see Disney tackle Polynesian culture & mythology, as it’s a source of stories that have rarely been used in any medium. If I had any gripe with the movie, it would be that it comes across as a Polynesian version of Frozen. Now, I like Frozen, but I’m afraid that Moana will become the victim of being overplayed & getting milked dry. Until that happens however, I would gladly go back to the theater to see the adventure of Moana and her friend Maui once again!

HM2) Ghostbusters 2016 (Trailer)
Technically, I shouldn’t have put this on here. Technically, I didn’t even see this movie! My opinion on this film comes strictly from public & reviewer opinion, along with my own views. When I first saw the trailer, fear immediately crept into my mind when I saw how watered down this film would be. The humor was hallow, the actresses’s performances were okay at best (despite them putting on good performances in other features), and the horrific backlash from so-called “Liberal” SJWs when the film was criticized even months before it came out! Then, when I finally was shown on screen, the fact that most people simply went “meh” shows that this movie wasn’t necessary! With all of the drama surrounding Ghostbusters 2016, why would I put it on here? Well.......

I put it on here as a cautionary tale. A tale of feminism gone wrong, a tale of people blowing things out of proportion, and a tale of an issue that didn’t need to be an issue. If you were a girl or woman & you felt empowered after you saw this, then good for you! It probably did something for you that nobody else couldn’t grasp. For everyone else (Including myself), let Ghostbusters 2016 be an example of a non-issue becoming a false issue. If any of you liked it, then okay, you liked it. For me, I’ll probably never get near this thing.

1) Deadpool (Trailer)
Are any of you surprised by this!?

If there was anything that Deadpool proved, it would be that not only are R-Rated superhero movies possible, but they can succeed! This movie has so many good things going for it: story, writing, characters, you name it! The action was great too, as it was far more violent than any other Marvel movie that has ever been made, and it’s strangely refreshing to hear a superhero swear, and even have sex! Either Disney was smoking something when the script came their way, or they realized that perhaps it was the right time to have a “Mature” superhero. Whatever the case, it’s time for all of us to be a damn superhero!

So these were my top 5 movies of 2016. Definitely a.......super year, if you ask me. So see you two days from now, when we’ll take a look at my top 5 albums of 2016.
